Friends of the SH Knight Museum is a nonprofit community benefit organization with the goal of raising awareness and funds to reopen the Geological Museum on the University of Wyoming campus at full operational status. PO Box 1928, Laramie, WY, 82073. dinos82071@gmail.com
On Tuesday, June 30 at 5:00 p.m. the University of Wyoming Geological Museum closed its doors. It was a sad moment for all of us who care about the museum. The museum was closed as a result of budget cuts announced by UW President Tom Buchanan on June 4, 2009 that included the museum’s small operating budget and the salary of the long-time director Brent Breithaupt and his part-time office assistant Jennifer Durer.
I am disgusted by the tone of these articles. No reporter asked how the funding will continue and this was much too favorable to UW. No one seems to think this was a PR stunt. I think the Friends need to re-brand themselves as a group assisting with continued fundraising to bring in a curator to allow the museum to fulfill its educational mission.
ReplyDeleteAs I have said on my own blog this statement from the university really feels like a "here, now shut up and go away" by the administration. Opening a museum and not maintaining it are not what we want. the collections need to be cared for, maintained and someone other than a security guard needs to do that. I think the administration is feeling the pressure but this is their half-assed way of trying to make people happy and make it (all the attention to their huge mistake and all the bad press) go away.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments. We need concrete indication from the public that this is NOT what the outcry was about. Friends will be meeting this afternoon to strategize. Agreed, the "with curator" part of reopening, in our mission statement, must come to the forefront. Thanks, Meg, for your committed attention to this issue. Thanks, Rebecca, as well, for keeping the issue alive on your blog.
